How do I know if I need Marriage or Couples Counseling?
Couples often find themselves in the same types of arguments that they can’t seem to stop. It can first start about whose picking up the children or doing the dishes tonight but then leads to the same type of heated argument or pulling away of one partner from the other. If your relationship can’t get out of this pattern and you’re feeling frustrated and discouraged about the relationship, counseling is a way of breaking this cycle and getting to the underlying areas that need to be addressed for more connection and better communication.
Common problems addressed:
Lack of intimacy and connection
What can I expect in Marriage Counseling?
My approach with couples is to first help them identify their current cycle or ways of communication with each other. Together, we then look at addressing the underlying emotions of each parter and look to create new experiences of connection and intimacy in the relationship. Marriage counseling is focused on addressing the areas that are too difficult to talk about in the relationship and creating new more connecting moments for the couple.
How long does it take?
Marriage counseling is focused on addressing long standing issues that have taken years to develop in the relationship. You can expect at least 8-12 sessions but every couple has their own particular areas to address that can take longer if need be. I use a type of therapy called Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy that is short-term in nature and has been proven to provide lasting change in couples and in marriages.
